Music Magazine Front Cover and Contents Page

I used photoshop to create my front cover, contents page and double page article. By using my own house style, and genre of the (pop/rock) I have created a music magazine. Here is what I have created, using my own photography and ideas:

Photo Shoot Task

For part of the music magazine, I had to prepare my own photoshoot so that I had five shots each for a front cover, contents page and a double page spread. To make the photoshoot look professional I had to change/arrange different light settings, background, costume and characters. I also used props in my photoshoot for example headphones. For the pictures, I made sure that the band shots were taken with the rule of three so that they looked professional. I also made sure my friends and I looked directly into the camera so it was direct mode of address. I also used indirect mode of address in my photography so that the music magazine will be interesting and appealing to people.

Readership Profile

Here are some of the photographs we took for the photo shoot task:

This is a ML Shot. The costume used was just "casual" wear because I wanted to promote the 'light-hearted' 'fun-loving' atmosphere to help portray that the people are 'down to earth' unlike the stereotypical well-posed photographs that are used in the media.

This is a close-up. The centre character is looking directly at the camera (direct mose of address). This is to make her centre of attention as she is the main singer. In the media, the lead singer of a band is usually placed in the foreground and the background singers/guitarists are in the background. To try and create a sense of realism to the photograph I put one of the characters at the front and the other two at the back.

This tight framed photo is very good at engaging the audience. The photo creates humour and has a cheeky interpretation. The people in the photograph look like they are about to burst out of the doors, and the facial expressions create a light-hearted photograph and through the poses the audience can see they are down to earth/fun characters.

This is a high angle shot. The camera is tilted downwards on the characters to make them look like down to earth people. Normally in the media, low angle shots (camera facing upwards towards the subject) are used to make the band/person look superior. In this shot I used a high angle shot (camera facing downwards) to make the characters look normal/just as superior as any other person. The setting/framing is interesting too as the scenery is nice and summery helping to emphasise the 'fun' and 'innocent' personalities of the teenage band.

This is a low angle shot (camera facing upwards). It helps to make the character look more superior and more beautiful because the camera is lower than her. The lighting is also interesting as it makes her hair look shiny and her complexion look good. The facial expression is also good in conveying the 'innocent' 'kind-hearted' 'down to earth' character that I wanted to portray.

This shot is good at conveying the 'cheeky' persona of the individuals. The wheelbarrow prop also helps to connote the 'light-hearted' effect and the green setting helps to make the characters stand out. The cheeky facial expressions also helps to convey the personalities of the people.

This is a high angle show (camera facing downwards). In this picture I tried to create a 'light-hearted', musical photo. The costume was helpful in doing this as it has headphones on it. I also used indirect mode of address because I'm not looking directly at the camera. The way the lighting is on my hair also helps to make it look healthy/in good condition whilst also making it look more professional. Also the camera angle also helps me too look more superior and musical.

This photograph was a low angle shot (character looking up at the character) because it helps to make her look down to earth. Although the person is reaching out to the camera, it helps to make it look like she is reaching out to the audience and pulling them in the picture with her. This is called direct mode of address as it is engaging the audience, therfore this would be good on the front of a magazine cover in the media. The framing is also tight which makes the photo more effective. I also like the costume she is wearing as it isn't too 'dressy' and therefore conveys a sense of realism and a 'down to earth' person.

Final College Magazine

For my College Magazine "The Prior Edition" cover page, I experimented with photoshop, learning new ways of editing, to help me through the making of my cover page. First of all I placed the medium close up picture of my friends and I onto photoshop then edited it. Then I chose a background and other images to put onto my cover page. I made my magazine an Autumn Edition 2010 so that it fits in with the season, which would influence people to buy the magazine because it is up to date.

Heres a practice advert that I made on photoshop before I started making my college/music magazine.

Here are some picture ideas that I could use in my college magazine "The Prior Edition":

Photography

Here are some example covers of magazines that have been used to attract the readers attention by using direct mode of adress, setting, lighting, font style and font colours to engage their audience's attention.

The "KERRANG!" magazine cover uses the rules of three and the lead singer is obviously the one in the middle and the sleek pose helps convey their rock n' roll lifestyle. Mode of address can be defined as the ways in which relations between addresser and addressee are constructed in a text or image. In order to communicate, a producer of any text must make some assumptions about an intended audience; reflections of such assumptions may be discerned in the image.

In this pic Beyonce is seen as a stylish, woman. The"sexy" pose helps to attract the audience, who aspire to look as good as her.
A medium close-up shot of an individual will take in the body from the knees or waist up, and this is exactly the technique used in this image of Beyonce.

This picture of Ciara is a Medium Close-up shot, and the dramatic "sexy" pose helps to attract a female audience again, because stereotypically, women all over the world want to be seen as healthy, pretty and aspire to be "good-looking" like many celebrities.

For my college magazine I used a hat as a prop and took some images for the cover of my magazine "The Prior Edition". Here are some of the shots:

Full Length Shot
For this photograph I wanted to focus on the framing around the image.
One of the easiest ways to take a creative photograph is to compose your subject with a frame around it. A photographic frame is an object that acts as a border or frame for your subject. The frame directs the viewer’s attention to a particular subject or point of interest within the photograph. Frames also create perspective and show depth which I think this photograph shows.
I have used this full length shot on my college magazines' contents page.

Our College magazine readers are a mixed sex group all between the ages of 16-19 who fit into the social grade of BC1C2. Most of the readers are into different types of muisic and all of the reader’s are happy, cheerful and excentric. Most of the college readers also like fashion and are interested in religion. Another question I asked the students was if they had an idol or a celebrity icon. Most of the students said they did for example, Leonardo De Caprio was mentioned and big stars like Lady Gaga and Morgan Freeman. Most of the college magazine readers also consider themselves to be successful people, with a total of four out of five people saying they do.
College magazine readership: All at college studying to become actors, instrument artificers or hopefully becoming what they want to be. They are mostly from working class backgrounds, apart from two out of the five students who come from middle class backgrounds. All of the students would be interested in reading an article about rock music and also they say that they often act upon friends or internet recommendations, showing that students can be easily influenced by the media. When the college magazine readers were asked if they believe the stuff they read in the media, for example magazines or on the television or radio, they said that they sometimes do. However one out of the five people said they didn’t believe the stuff they read.
From my questionnaire, I found out that most college students are mature and don’t mind answering personal questions about themselves and their family. Also they don’t mind telling people which class they are from.

The reason I chose the questions I did was because they weren't too personal, and they were sensible for the students at college. Some people don't like to answer questions which are personal, so asking if they minded letting us know what their parents did for a living before they told us, was sensible.

The mediated image of the earlier McFly covers created a mix of the clean-cut 'boy band' image with the outrageous anarchic stage performances of various other bands, making them a kind of 'teen-friendly Nirvana'.

Photographs :)

This is a photo taken from a "low angled close up shot".
This is a picture using the technique "the rules of thirds".

This photo was taken using the "juxtaposed" technique. As the two people in this picture are very different with their styles, hair etc

Intro for Coursework

Hello, I'm Rachael Young and this is the first blog of my music magazine coursework project and over the course of this blog, I will show you how I have been building up ideas for my music magazine.
A Bit About Me
I am particularly interested in:

30 Seconds to Mars

Michael Buble

Fightstar
McFly
Amy Winehouse
Enrique Iglesias
Over the years, I have noticed that Pop music and Rock music is liked by a wide variety of people. Whilst pop is usually liked by young children, rock music is mostly loved by teenagers and adults.  The most natural choice of magazine for me to study is magazine is a magazine for the Pop/Rock Genre as I like a lot of pop and rock music. I am also going to see 30 seconds to mars live soon so hopefully i could download some of my own images from that genre shortly.
When I searched on http://www.nrs.co.uk/toplinereadership.html I found that in Kerrang! magazine, most of readers were adults and mthere was more male readers than female.
